This pair of vintage mid century modern brown leather Tugendhat lounge chairs designed by Mies van der Rohe for Knoll Associates are circa 1960. A more rare relative to the iconic Bauhaus Barcelona chair, the Tugendhat chair was originally designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for the Tugendhat Villa in Brno, Czech Republic in 1929. Like the Barcelona chair, the Tugendhat chair epitomizes early 20th century modernism combining sleek, sophisticated design with premium materials, exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. This vintage pair of Tugendhat armless lounge chairs features a heavy, polished chrome stainless steel cantilevered frame with two removable brown leather upholstered cushions resting on heavy leather chair strapping. The elegant cantilever frame gives the chair both its distinct profile and unique comfort with a gentle bounce to the seat. This rare matching pair is both highly collectible and functional, with a classic modernist aesthetic that has become timeless. Manufacturer's label to underside: 'Distributed by Art Metal - Knoll Corp. Knoll Associates Divisions 320 Park Ave. New York, N.Y.'
Tugendhat Villa
Architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designed the Tugendhat Villa residence for the Tugendhat family in 1929. Located in Brno, Czech Republic, the villa is a celebrated example of functionalist architecture, featuring austere concrete construction, exterior walls of glass, and open interiors filled with natural light. A work of total architecture, Mies also specified everything for the interior, from light switches to furnishings. One of the pieces he designed, used in several rooms of the house, was the Feder-Sessel ("spring chair" in English) that became known as the Tugendhat Chair when photos of the villa were featured in the press.
