Each platter features the highly collectible “Turc” or “Turquerie” pattern, a richly detailed Oriental-inspired design depicting figures, horses, and architectural scenes in cobalt blue on white faïence. The scalloped edges and fine detailing highlight the refined craftsmanship typical of Johnston’s work. Both platters bear the original David Johnston Series 2 backstamp on the underside, confirming their authenticity and origin.

David Johnston, an Englishman who served as Mayor of Bordeaux during the 1830s, established his pottery around 1834 with the help of Boudon de Saint-Amans, a former Lahens and Rateau employee. Their factory was among the first in France to produce English-style transferware on an industrial scale, blending English ceramic techniques with French artistry. Johnston’s pottery flourished through the 1840s before later becoming the firm of Jules Vieillard. These stamped examples represent the height of his production and are now considered rare survivors of early French transferware.
