Wassily Kandinsky (Russian, 1866–1944)
La Tache Noire Abstract Composition, 1924
Hand-colored lithograph on cream paper, signed in plate with monogram "K 24" lower left; numbered in pencil lower right "182/300"; with blindstamp lower left and label verso from Rosa Esman Gallery, New York.
A striking early 20th-century modernist composition by the Russian-born pioneer of abstraction, Wassily Kandinsky, this hand-colored lithograph exemplifies the artist's groundbreaking visual vocabulary of geometry, symbolism, and synesthesia. The composition centers on a black ovoid form edged in vibrant red and yellow, intersected by a dynamic scaffolding of linear elements—compasses, triangles, rectilinear bars, and chromatic circles—that seem to oscillate in a field of energetic balance and dissonance. Angular diagonals and concentric forms pulse with Kandinsky’s hallmark tension between order and spontaneity, echoing his spiritual conviction that art must convey inner emotional states through pure form.
Dated 1924 and bearing the artist’s printed monogram “K 24” lower left, this work belongs to the period shortly after Kandinsky joined the Bauhaus in Weimar, where he refined his theories of “inner necessity” and explored the synesthetic relationships between color, line, and sound. This impression is from a limited edition of 300, numbered in graphite at lower right (182/300), and retains an embossed publisher’s seal lower left, along with an original label from the Rosa Esman Gallery, New York—a gallery instrumental in the 20th-century promotion of European avant-garde printmakers.
This example is presented in a vintage brushed aluminum frame consistent with mid-century exhibition standards.
Measurements: 15.25" h x 12.75" w (framed); sheet size approx. 14 5/8" x 12 1/8" (per label).
