A remarkable and very large example of Doulton Lambeth stoneware, this double-handled tyg showcases the exceptional artistry of Louisa E. Edwards, one of the most talented decorators of the period. The surface is richly adorned with hand-applied floral and foliate motifs in deep cobalt blue, set in striking relief against a finely textured beige stoneware ground. Each petal and leaf is modeled with extraordinary precision, highlighting the distinctive Doulton technique that brought art and craftsmanship together in the late Victorian era.
Mounted with a silver-plated rim, finely engraved:
“Rossall School Athletic Sports 1880. One Mile Race, Won by G. E. H. Pratt. Time 5 Min 3 Sec.”
—this piece served as a presentation trophy, uniting fine artistry with the enduring traditions of academic sport and achievement.
Founded in 1815, Doulton & Co. of Lambeth, London earned its reputation as one of Britain’s most innovative potteries. Under the direction of Henry Doulton, the company became celebrated for pioneering salt-glazed stoneware and later for employing talented women artists and designers—many trained at the Lambeth School of Art. Their individually signed creations transformed utilitarian ceramics into true works of decorative art. By the 1870s, Doulton Lambeth had become a symbol of English artistic excellence, sought after by collectors and patrons across Europe.
Standing 7.5 inches high, 8.5 inches wide and 7 inches deep, this tyg’s bold rectangular triple handles and substantial presence make it a commanding display piece. Weight is 4 pounds. The underside bears a partially impressed Doulton Lambeth backstamp, dating it to circa 1878–1879. Very good condition with no chips or damage. A superb fusion of Victorian design, fine craftsmanship, and historical provenance, this early Doulton Lambeth trophy tyg is both an exceptional collector’s piece and a striking decorative statement for the refined interior.
