It is hand-painted, Sevres-style German porcelain. The soup tureen has a hand-painted gold leaf "Vienna style" gold medallion. It depicts the Classical Greek myth of Pan. The gold leaf medallion is repeated on the companion charger plate. The 2 medallions on the lid of the serving bowl are each 4" in diameter, and the medallion on the charger plate is 6" in diameter. A delicate neo-classical gold leaf decoration encircles the medallion on the charger plate.

The bowl and lid are in outstanding condition with no cracks, color loss, or repair. The lid has 2 tiny white spots where porcelain peaks thru, but is otherwise in excellent condition. The Charger plate is in good condition and has a few scratches, visible in the pictures. When the tureen is on the charger plate, the scratches are not visible. The dimensions of the tureen are 12 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall. The tureen sits snugly upon the companion plate, which is 12.5 inches in diameter and 1 inch tall with a raised base. Both pieces bear the Rosenthal maker's stamp on the back.
