A beautiful example of Grand Rapids furniture craftsmanship, this Federal Revival vanity desk was produced by Berkey & Gay, one of the most respected American furniture makers of the late 19th and early 20th century. Berkey & Gay pieces were known for their refined classical styling, detailed craftsmanship, and richly grained veneers — and this piece is no exception.
Dating from 1925 this desk reflects the Colonial and Federal style revival that was popular in fine American homes of the period. It features Hepplewhite / Sheraton style fluted legs, delicate turned foot details, and the original brass ring pulls with neoclassical eagle and crest motifs. The drawer interiors have their original warm finish, and the inside bears the authentic Berkey & Gay medallion hallmark.
Originally designed as a ladies’ vanity, this piece transitions beautifully today as a writing desk, hallway console, laptop workstation, or foyer accent piece.
This piece embodies the history of Grand Rapids as “The Furniture City,” where Berkey & Gay was considered a top-tier maker alongside Kindel, Widdicomb, and Sligh. It carries with it the character, craftsmanship, and romance of a bygone era.
