The mirror … Read more This is a massive French 19th century mirror from the main hall of the Archbishop Palace Rouen, France. The mirror is over 10’ tall and more than 6’ wide. Both the frame and mirror do show their historic age: the original mercury mirror glass has oxidized, creating an undeniable detail in the plate, concentrated to horizontal lines of loss that expose the wood backing. We can assume over a period of time, moist air flowing through the spaces behind the mirror caused the mercury to oxidize and flake off the glass. Similarly the gold leaf of the molding has patinated, darkening and rubbing to expose the red bole underneath. What a fantastic piece of history to dazzle in any interior grand enough to accommodate such a large mirror! Please view the detailed images to see more. See less
