Pair of Framed Early 19th-Century French Fashion Engravings — “Costume Parisien,” 1802 & 1809
A charming pair of original hand-colored copperplate engravings from Journal des Dames et des Modes, the Parisian fashion journal that defined early 19th-century style. Each plate bears the Costume Parisien title and date — 1802 and 1809 — capturing the height of Empire-era elegance through finely detailed linework and delicate watercolor hand-tinting.
The 1802 plate (No. 25) depicts a lady in an ivory gown with blue floral accents, titled “Peigne sur le Côté. Tunique de grande Parure.”
The 1809 plate (No. 18) features two women in neoclassical dresses trimmed with ribbons and fur — graceful studies of Parisian fashion during the Napoleonic period.
Each engraving retains its visible plate impression, confirming the original copperplate intaglio process. The color remains soft and luminous, with gentle age toning consistent with works over two centuries old.
Professionally matted and presented under glass in vintage giltwood frames with subtle red undertones and time-worn patina, enhancing their authenticity and display value.
