Beautiful large thrown stoneware combed slip clay jug by Artist Michael A. Crocker. It was signed by the artist on the bottom. It was made in the mid-1980’s based on research of Michael Crocker in The Marks Project.
Michael A. Crocker is a well known folk potter from Lula, Georgia. He is now known for his face jugs and other traditional southern pottery, both decorative and functional. Michael Crocker worked on his skills at the Cravens’ Pottery in Gillsville, Georgia along with his brother Dwayne before opening his own shop in Lula. Michael is also well known for working with his other brother Melvin early in his career. Their work is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC.
This would be a wonderful addition to a southern pottery collection. It would go well in a Rustic, French Country, or Beach decor.
It is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. It does have a few minor scuff marks due to age and normal use. One place on the side appears to have occurred during the making of the jug.
The Jug measures 14” Tall x 9” Wide at the center x 6.25” Wide at the base. It weighs 8 pounds 1.7 ounces.
