In private households, they were also used as shrines for loved ones that had passed and locks of hair or special mementos would be placed inside to honor the deceased.

The raised scroll relief design is exquisite on this 19th century French reliquary. The solid gilt wood exterior enhances the uniqueness of the reliquary and also expresses the importance of the relics that it contained. The cinnamon interior emits a warm contrast to the gold from the diamond shaped center opening to create a focal point. There is a cut out with lid in the top. A very special piece. See less
