A late 19th-century velvet box, or casket, with intricate gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, resting on a stand. It is attributed to E. F. Caldwell & Co., a prestigious American firm known for its fine metalwork and lighting designs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The box is covered in a deep red or crimson velvet with gilded bronze hardware (ormolu). The mounts feature highly decorative scrollwork, floral designs, and what appear to be central crests or escutcheons on the front and lid. These types of caskets were often used for storing jewelry, letters, or other valuables.
