Ukiyo-e, meaning 'pictures of the floating world,' is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th to the 19th century. It typically depicts scenes from everyday life, beautiful women, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, historical scenes, and landscapes. Woodblock printing was the primary medium for Ukiyo-e, allowing for mass production and making art accessible to a wider audience. The artists of this period, such as Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Kunisada, created iconic works that have had a profound influence on Western art.
Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III) was one of the most popular and prolific woodblock print designers of the Ukiyo-e school in the 19th century. He is renowned for his portraits of kabuki actors and beautiful women, often depicting them in elaborate kimonos and dramatic poses. His work is characterized by its vibrant colors, intricate details, and expressive lines, capturing the essence of Edo period culture. The prints shown here, with their depiction of samurai and women, align with his common themes.
This Japanese set is in excellent shape for it’s age.
