About Jasperware
Named after the mineral jasper for marketing appeal, Wedgwood's exact formula remains confidential. Analysis reveals barium sulphate as the key ingredient (approximately 57%), combined with ball clay, flint, and barium carbonate.
The fired body is naturally white but stained with metallic oxides: cobalt for blue, chromium for sage green, manganese for lilac, iron for black. This piece features the classic "dipped" technique (surface coloring only), introduced in 1777 when Wedgwood noted cobalt was "too dear to mix with the clay of the whole grounds."
The white relief decorations are hand-applied using liquid clay slip pressed from carved molds, then refined by skilled lapidaries - a tradition of craftsmanship spanning over 250 years.
