Reliquaries date back to the 4th century and were used to contain holy relics in the church and still continue to be important art and religious objects of the Catholic Church. In private households, they were also used as shrines for loved ones that had passed and locks of hair or special mementos would be placed inside to honor the deceased.
This 18th century Italian bombe-shaped reliquary is exquisite in its detail. A heart-shaped window in the door is flanked by 2 hand carved gilt wood putti/cherubs and coats of arms on each side surely represents the family or church, whose most special relics were once contained in this extraordinary vessel. Today, it would make a stunning and unique work of art in your home.
