An exquisite 18th-century French Louis XV fall front desk, richly decorated in the japanned style with chinoiserie scenes. The slant front is beautifully hand-painted with figures in a garden landscape before a lakeside pavilion, framed by scrolling gilt borders. When opened, the desk reveals a fitted interior with small drawers and a writing surface, a charming reflection of the period’s fascination with Eastern artistry and refinement.
The desk rests on graceful cabriole legs and features further painted floral decoration on the apron and sides. The dark brown japanned finish, highlighted with gilt and red tones, exudes the sophisticated whimsy characteristic of Rococo design. Pieces such as this one exemplify the 18th-century European adaptation of East Asian lacquer work—treasured for both their craftsmanship and their exotic allure.
In good antique condition consistent with age and normal use, showing expected wear and scattered touch-ups, particularly to the legs and left side (pictured). There is some sun drying and loss to the painted finish on the left side of the desk, but overall it presents beautifully with rich color and graceful form—a wonderful statement piece for the collector or decorator drawn to Old World elegance. 37h x 38w x 25d knee height 28
