A splendid Victorian portable travel or "lap" desk was beautifully crafted in England around 1890.Burlwood with brass embellishments and a brass nameplate that was never engraved. The box opens up to reveal a red felt covered writing surface which folds out and has storage below for papers/writing materials, and three narrow drawers. Just above the desk portion are five compartments, four small and one for pens.. Key is original. There are a few scuffs here and there. The desk, weighing 20 lbs, 4.5 oz., is from the days when a gentleman had valets and porters to worry about getting about with such a heavy item.
The silken hand rubbed finish is in extremely fine condition on figured solid mahogany.
