This remarkable Victorian-era biscuit jar by Seaton Pottery of Scotland is a true work of art. This richly glazed ceramic piece bears the hand-painted inscription “Mrs. Gallagher 1892.” Crafted in a striking multicolor drip glaze of deep cobalt, moss green, and earthy brown tones, this jar captures the vivid artistry and craftsmanship that defined Seaton’s late 19th-century production.
Measuring approximately 10 inches high, 8 inches wide and 7.5 inches deep and weighing over 5 pounds, this substantial jar has the classic barrel form and includes its original domed lid with knob finial. Both lid and base are in very good antique condition. There is light crazing on the base as shown. There are a few glazed over production nicks. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Founded in the mid-1800s in Seaton, Aberdeenshire, Seaton Pottery became known for its durable stoneware and distinctive glazes, which were both decorative and functional. During the Victorian period, it was popular to personalize household pottery items with names and dates, often to commemorate weddings, anniversaries, or gifts for homemakers, making each piece entirely unique.
This rare 1892 example stands as a wonderful piece of Scottish pottery history, equally suited as a decorative accent, collector’s display, or a statement piece for a country kitchen or traditional home.
