Elevate your collection with this captivating, rare, original and limited out-of-print lithograph, from Skira’s, Geneva Paris, Painters of the Twentieth Century Color and Expression, The Page Boy, from Chaim Soutine's PRIVATE COLLECTION. In the mid 1900’s, famous artists and publisher Albert Skira collaborated on this book/artist portfolio to include limited edition prints, often from the artist’s private collection, that were unbound and could be removed and framed.
The Page Boy or Page Boy at Maxim's, is a compelling portrait that captures the tension between the subject's personal dignity and his professional subservience. Soutine focuses on anonymous, working-class service staff, whom he treated with the same artistic respect usually reserved for more influential sittersPrinted in Switzerland, Skira’s collection catalogs used a method called “tipping” to the color plates that were included with each publication. The print is attached by hand on the left edge and behind the plate on the page is the title, original size and date of the artwork.
These portraits, including The Page Boy, were crucial in establishing Soutine's reputation. After a major American collector, Dr. Albert Barnes, bought dozens of his paintings in the early 1920s, Soutine's fortunes changed dramatically, lifting him from poverty and bringing him international acclaim. Today, the "Page Boy" series is considered one of his greatest achievements.
History of publisher:
Albert Skira created an international publishing house that worked directly with artists and traveled the globe to gain attention and inspire artistic talent through multiple international gallery showcasings and private events of influential and transformative art. He collaborated with the greatest artists, from Picasso and Matisse to the surrealists. He continues to be a respected international point of reference for artistic monographs, art and culture books, as well as in-depth catalogues. His passion was most influential in creating a space for conversations, encounters and exchanges of art.
The last 4 photos are not included, but taken from the origianl Skira portfolio from where the color plate originated which shows origin of color plate/lithograph and it’s authenticity, but are not included in the sale.
