Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947) was a prominent French Post-Impressionist painter and printmaker, widely regarded as one of the greatest colorists of modern art. He was a founding member of the avant-garde group known as Les Nabis. Bonnard rarely painted directly from life. Instead, he made numerous pencil sketches and notes in diaries and then worked up the paintings in his studio, relying on memory and his personal interpretation. He used daring color juxtapositions to create dazzling effects of light, often making color the main focus of his canvases.
His style is beautifully demonstrated in these pieces showing that behind these works lies his intimate, personal approach to everyday subjects and his use of memory and color to evoke emotion and the passage of time.

Printed in Switzerland, Skira’s collection catalogs used a method called “tipping” to the color plates that were included with each publication. The print is attached by hand on the left edge and behind the plate on the page is the title, original size and date of the artwork.
