Vibrant purple velvet lining throughout, additional … Read more Lovely English Victorian Lady's mahogany dresser box with original dresser jars and silverplate lids. Vibrant purple velvet lining throughout, additional compartment for storing jewelry or other valuable goods can be found underneath with pin lock. Gold-tooled leather document sleeve and mercury glass mirror behind ruched velvet lid. Large partially hidden compartment under the center tray, lined with deep purple dyed leather. Finely figured mahogany exterior with brass ‘campaign’ style handles.

All in remarkable condition. The base of the box is covered with the original green baize.

Ladies dressing cases would contain perfume bottles, powders, mirrors, brushes, combs, toothbrushes, manicure sets, pin cushions, and items for writing and concealed jewelry trays. These dresser boxes reflected the increase of travel in the Victorian era, both in frequency and distance. Travel was now done on a grander scale, with better roads, plus the option of travel by steamship and train. For a society that was both practical and opulent, Victorian ladies had exquisite dressing boxes fitted with any and all necessities of travel.
