About the Poster: The History of Cuba is characterized by colonization and conflict. Spain, the United States and the USSR have all played integral and important parts in the colonization of the island, and each has left its impact - positive, negative, and lasting - on the island and its people.
The Cuban arts community, and most specifically the community of artists who are involved in poster arts, have played a significant role in expressing and displaying the voice of the Cuban people. Susan Sontag, in an important 1970 essay on precisely this topic wrote that "Cuba obviously has no use for the poster to inspire its citizens to buy consumer goods. That still leaves a large place for the poster, though. Any modern society, communist no less than capitalist, is a network of signs. Under revolutionary communism, the poster remains one principal type of public sign: decorating shared ideas and firing moral sympathies, rather than promoting private appetites."
Antonio Maceo was a Cuban general considered to be one of the greatest heroes of the nation's 30-year struggle for independence from Spain. He was given the nickname "The Bronze Titan" in reference to his skin color and heroics on the battlefield.
His most famous quote is "No white nor blacks, but only Cubans".
