A rare and beautifully hand-colored set of four porcelain plates from Shore and Water Birds by the revered naturalist, artist, and conservationist Dennis Puleston, produced by Delano Studios in 1972. This scarce variation features a distinctive celadon-green border, a colorway seldom seen.
Puleston was celebrated for his extraordinary ability to capture the vitality of wildlife through both scientific precision and artistic grace. His paintings were informed by a lifetime of fieldwork, adventure, and environmental advocacy — he was a founding member of the Environmental Defense Fund and instrumental in the successful effort to ban DDT. His art reflects that same devotion to the natural world: meticulous in detail yet deeply expressive.
Each plate depicts a different coastal bird — Killdeer, Black-Crowned Night Heron, Great Blue Heron, and Ruddy Turnstone — all rendered with hand-applied color that brings soft depth and lifelike luminosity to each scene. Made by Delano Studios of Setauket, Long Island, the set reflects both artistic refinement and the studio’s commitment to exceptional craftsmanship.
