Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.
Did you know that Westmoreland was the first to make milk glass in the United States and was the originator of the hen on nest covered dishes? This cruet’s pattern, # 77 American Hobnail, made its debut in 1950. Westmoreland’s decision to launch this collection had to do with a resurgence and interest in milk glass, at the time. The collection ended its run, from what I understand, in the early 1960s. In perfect condition, it measures 5” x 3” H/W (with stopper in); weight 9 oz.; stopper is original to the cruet. Crafted from thick pressed milk glass in snowy white. There is no makers mark, and according to the NMGCS, Westmoreland rarely marked pieces made between the 1920s and 1950s, and thereafter some pieces bore a mark and others did not. The cruet is in perfect condition. The bottom portion of the stopper’s stem has a small missing sliver of glass which does not impact its function (tight fit) or beauty, as the stem is inside the cruet which is unseen (see photos 5 & 6). There is also a small chip on the upper band of the stopper that is indiscernible unless you are looking for it. This cutie is the perfect addition for a collector of cruets or milk glass, or the perfect gift for someone who is.
Thanks for looking!
Westmoreland's Milk Glass
First made by Westmoreland in the 1920s, milk glass was the most remarkable and prolific product this company manufactured. In fact, they were one of the top producers of fine quality milk glass in the United States, according to the Collector's Encyclopedia of Milk Glass by Betty and Bill Newbound. This includes the ever-popular hen on nest covered dishes, which were first made of more delicate milk glass in comparison to the examples produced from the 1940s on. While the company is clearly best known for its milk glass, with 90 percent of the glass produced from the 1920s through the 1950s having the milky white hue, in the 1920s, the company did make limited selections of high quality decorated glass and crystal, including hen on nest dishes made in a variety of colors in addition to the ever-popular milk glass examples. Even into the 1950s, limited amounts of amber, blue, green, pink, and brown glass left the Westmoreland factory.
