An antique Spanish Colonial period hand carved and painted santo church altar figure. Born in Mexico in the first half of the 19th century, the religious folk art sculpture depicting an Archangel, with polychrome paint over carved wood.
What we love about this piece is the incredible and unusual patina! Beautifully aged, warm subdued color, heavily worn and faded, organically distressed, with chippy paint and amazing natural craquelure finish.
Full of rich antique character, rustic old world charm and historic depth aquired from a life well lived, the charming example mounted to a later ebonized wood display base, lacking wings, loss to right hand and foot.
