For sale are two 1940's French carved oak chauffeuse, or low chair, in the manner of Charles Dudouyt in near perfect antique condition. With cone-shaped, truncated legs and turned front stretcher. The rush seats are in near perfect condition. 17 (length) x 14 (depth) x 24 (height)/Seat height, 11".
These chairs are attributed to French designer, Charles Dudouyt, who created carved oak chairs as ‘fireside’ chairs, hence the low seats. He crafted wooden furniture in strong Art Deco forms, using playful geometries and construction methods more in keeping with the robust Arts and Crafts Movement. Handcrafted pieces like this pair are increasingly rare and valuable.
