79220 Antique Red Persian Sarouk Rug, 02'02 x 03'11.
Woven in the heart of Persia during the twilight years of the Qajar dynasty or dawn of the Pahlavi reign, this hand knotted wool antique Sarouk rug unfolds like a botanical manuscript—each blossom a verse, each vine a lyrical flourish. From its warm red field springs a fountain of stylized flora: palmettes unfurl like peacock feathers, rosettes echo celestial forms, and curling fronds trace the arc of wind-swept gardens. The design blooms outward with rhythmic symmetry, as though mapping the eternal dance between order and abundance—a visual homage to paradise made manifest beneath one’s feet.
The palette—rich yet refined—sings in tones drawn from earth and sky. The vibrant red ground hums with life, a backdrop for blossoms rendered in indigo, rose, beige, and sapphire blue. A midnight navy blue border frames the field, patterned with stylized florals and curling saz leaves, framing the composition like the enclosing walls of a Persian courtyard. These shades speak of vegetable dyes and patient aging—imbued with the soulful patina of nearly a century’s passage.
Each motif in this Sarouk rug carries quiet symbolism: lotus-like blooms for spiritual awakening, serrated leaves for protection, and arching vines for continuity. The central floral arrangement, neither medallion nor lattice-bound, rises like a sacred cypress—a symbol of immortality in Persian poetry. This is not a mere decorative object, but a spiritual landscape rendered in wool—a woven prayer for beauty, stability, and eternal renewal.
Crafted in the famed weaving village of Mohajeran near Arak, where master artisans balanced technical mastery with poetic vision, this Sarouk rug belongs to the early 20th century. Its weave is dense, its pile full, and its soul unmistakably Persian. In it, one hears echoes of gardens whispered in Hafez’s verse, the hush of an afternoon wind through orchard groves, and the enduring hand of the weaver—anonymous but ever-present—who turned wool and dye into timeless art.
