Charming late-19th-century English or Continental European hand-stitched needlework depicting two elegantly dressed women in a pastoral garden setting beneath birch trees. The figures are beautifully rendered in a combination of fine petit-point and longer satin stitches, creating subtle depth and dimension. Threads appear to be a blend of silk and wool, producing soft sheen and texture variations when viewed at an angle.
The embroidery is bordered by an intricate woven banding trim in taupe-tan tones and mounted over a black fabric ground within its original carved wood frame. The back panel is solid wood, consistent with late-Victorian or Edwardian construction—possibly repurposed from a fireplace summer screen or wall hanging.
A lovely decorative textile that exemplifies refined 19th-century domestic artistry and would display beautifully in a parlor, dressing room, or curated gallery wall.
Additional photos show close-up details, texture, and back construction for clarity.

Minor tears to the black backing fabric and light fraying along the bottom trim (see photos). Frame shows gentle surface wear. Embroidery remains bright and stable with excellent thread retention. Hanging hardware has been removed and will need to be replaced before wall display. The horizontal wood strip on the back suggests where a base or stand was once attached, consistent with its likely use as a Victorian fireplace summer screen later adapted for wall display. Seller Note: Later screw-eye hangers were removed for safety; the piece likely originally stood on a base as a fireplace summer screen. Buyer may add new hardware if wall display is desired. less
