Though sometimes mistaken for champlevé, this piece is true cloisonné. Its light weight and interior impressions reflect a late Qing/early Republic production method in which forms were die-stamped before wires were laid. These “ghost marks” are the telltale sign of that technique. Small cloisonné planters like this were often displayed on a scholar’s desk and used for bonsai or bulb cultivation, uniting fine craftsmanship with the appreciation of nature in miniature.
