This print is part of John Boydell’s monumental “Houghton Gallery” series — engraved reproductions of paintings in Sir Robert Walpole’s collection at Houghton Hall. After Walpole’s death, the collection was famously sold to Catherine the Great of Russia in 1779; Boydell’s engravings were intended to preserve and circulate images of these masterworks in Britain and beyond.
Carlo Cignani, the original painter, was a leading Bolognese artist of the late Baroque, known for his idealized mythological scenes filled with graceful figures and rich color harmonies. A Nymph and Shepherd is a characteristic pastoral composition celebrating Arcadian innocence.
