A vintage souvenir combination matchbox holder & ashtray from Cunard Cruise Line. The opening in the center tower accommodates a box of matches (not included) w/ openings on the side allowing access to the box's striking surface. The attached saucer below is for spent matches and can be used as an astray. The ship featured on this piece is believed to be the RMS Aquitania. No maker's marks are on the piece but believed to be a 20thC fabrication.
The company, founded in 1840 with its first transatlantic crossing that same year, has historically been linked with the British Royal family through naming of its ships (the RMS Queen Elizabeth (1938), Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2, 1967), and the MS Queen Victoria (2007).
