Centaur Bacchante Herculaneum 18th C. Pair Greek Mythology Framed Color Engraving Signed Antiquities of Herculaneum Antique Gift Wall Art
These exquisite pair of hand-colored, 18th-century copper engravings depict two different centaur and bacchante scenes after frescoes found in the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum after centuries buried in the ashes of Vesuvius AD 79 eruption. The engravings are distinctly marked as Plate XXV and XXVI and inscribed with "P.S. Lamborn Sculp." and "C. Grignion Sculp." respectively. Peter Spendelowe Lamborn (1722 – November 5, 1774) was a renowned English engraver and miniature painter. Charles Grignion (1721-1810) was an engraver of French origin active in 18th C. England.
These engravings are consecutive illustrations from "The Antiquities of Herculaneum," the 1773 English translation, by Cambridge scholars, of the Italian edition.
The compositions are derived from 1st-century frescoes that originally adorned the walls of the Villa of Cicero and are now housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. These engravings are printed on early laid paper, featuring a Strasbourg Lily watermark and the initials "LVG." These initials belong to Lubertus van Gerrevink, a major eighteenth century Dutch paper manufacturer.
They are part of a collection of Herculaneum engravings in matching frames, which are listed separately.
Measurements: Frames: 15 3/4" wide by 13" high approximately.
