Bernard Boutet de Monvel (French, 1881-1949)
An outstanding figure of the Art Deco movement, Bernard Boutet de Monvel was a master painter, engraver, and fashion illustrator. He is celebrated for his "rectilinear" vision—a sophisticated, geometric style that used rulers and compasses to bring a photographic precision to his atmospheric landscapes and high-society portraits.
“LA CARRIOLE” c. 1912
This superb color aquatint and etching captures a "carriole" (a light horse-drawn carriage) traveling along a silhouetted, tree-lined road. It is a prime example of de Monvel's refined geometric linearity and a true precursor to the Art Deco movement.
* Medium: Original color aquatint and etching.
* Markings: Hand-signed by the artist in pencil (lower right) and titled in pencil (lower left).
* Edition: Annotated "Tiré à 200 - 50" in pencil. This identifies the piece as a desirable early impression—number 50 from the limited edition of 200. Early pulls are highly sought after by collectors for their crisp lines and deep ink saturation.
* Dimensions: Framed: 18” H x 17.5” L | Art: 11” H x 11.5” L.
Provenance & Market History:
* Estate Provenance: Sourced from the historic family mansion of a former Connecticut Governor (Lilley House). Its placement within this residence is documented via archival real estate photography, confirming its status as a curated heirloom.
* Investment Context: Interest in de Monvel’s work reached new heights following the landmark 2016 Sotheby’s Paris auction of his daughter’s collection, which totaled over $10 million and cemented his status as a blue-chip Art Deco master.
Fine Art Shipping & Handling
* Secure Packing: Professionally wrapped in heavy-duty bubble wrap and secured within a double-walled corrugated box to ensure the 110+ year vintage glass and frame arrive completely intact.

Consistent with its 110+ year age, the paper shows light uniform toning and a thin line of mat burn at the perimeter, adding to its authentic character. The sheet exhibits minor, uniform cockling (natural wavy ripples) consistent with original period framing and expansion over time. This minor planar distortion is stable, appropriate for a century-old print, and does not impact the integrity of the work. The impression remains sharp and free of foxing or water damage.. less
