Unlike later plastic or foam floats, this heavy buoy is crafted from a compressed wood-fiber and pitch composite, a transitional material used in the 1940s–60s before the switch to synthetics. The construction gives it a dense, solid weight and a beautifully tactile surface under its glossy paint layers.

Used originally to mark lobster traps or deep-set fishing lines, it now makes a striking coastal décor piece—perfect as a sculptural accent, doorstop, or shelf display in beach houses, lodges, or industrial interiors.
