This antique trio of hatchets beautifully illustrates the evolution of small axe design from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s. The left hatchet is an early 20th-century carpenter’s or shingling hatchet featuring a nail notch and flat hammer end, once used for precise carpentry and roofing work. The center example, a broad or hewing hatchet dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, has a wide offset blade for shaping logs and beams in traditional timber framing. Its handmade replacement handle adds authentic, timeworn character. The right hatchet, a mid-century sportsman’s or camp model from the 1940s–1950s, features a compact head and curved handle with reinforced grip, typical of outdoor tools sold through hardware stores and outfitters of the era. Displayed together, these antique hatchets tell the story of changing craftsmanship and utility across decades, making them a striking addition to any tool collection, workshop display, or rustic décor setting.
