Star of Bristol: Tin-Glazed Earthenware, Circa 1745
Object: Shallow Dish / Plate
Origin: Bristol, England
Date: Circa 1740-1750
Medium: Tin-Glazed Earthenware (Delftware)
Decoration: Sponged Manganese and Copper, Hand-Painted
Dimensions: 8 7/8 inches diameter x 1 1/4 inches deep.
This antique English plate is a charming and highly whimsical example of Bristol Delftware, produced during the height of its manufacturing period in the mid-18th century. Unlike the more formal, detailed designs often seen on high-status porcelain imports, this plate exemplifies the folk-art quality for which English Delftware is renowned .
The design is bold and freehand, dominated by a large, radiating star motif rendered in bright orange and green. At the center of the star, a small, stylized chinoiserie fence is visible—a popular decorative borrowing from East Asian designs that often appeared simplified and abstracted on European tin-glazed wares. The decoration is completed by highly textural sponged manganese accents and stylized floral bursts around the rim, giving the plate a spontaneous, lively appearance.
Historical Context: Whimsy and Delftware
Delftware, a term for tin-glazed earthenware produced across Europe, was particularly prolific in Bristol and London in the 18th century. Known for its soft, porous earthenware body covered in a thick, opaque white tin glaze, these wares were the everyman's answer to expensive imported Chinese porcelain.
The "feathered" or sponged decoration seen here, achieved by dipping sponges into manganese oxide (which fires to a purplish-brown), was a fast and efficient way to add color and volume to a piece. This technique allowed for the delightful naïveté and variation inherent in the Bristol style, making each piece unique and highly collectible today for its freshness and deviation from mass-produced perfection.
