The Machine-Man and the Philosopher: Paolozzi's "After Newton"
Object: Decorative Plate, "After Newton," Motiv 1
Artist: Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924–2005)
Manufacturer: Rosenthal, Studio-linie
Origin: Germany
Date: Circa 1980
Medium: Porcelain, Transfer Print, Colored Enamels
Dimensions: 12 inches diameter x 1 inch high (30.48 cm x 2.54 cm high).
This large porcelain plate, created for the innovative Rosenthal Studio-linie in the $1980$s, features Pop Art sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi's distinct vision of the scientist Sir Isaac Newton. The image is derived from Paolozzi's monumental bronze statue currently located at the British Library in London, which itself is a direct commentary on the famous 1795 color print by the poet and artist William Blake. The plate's rim is decorated with a vibrant, futuristic array of colorful mechanical parts, gears, and circuit-like designs.
A Dialogue Across Centuries
Paolozzi’s work continues a long artistic and philosophical debate about the limitations of pure reason. While Alexander Pope famously revered Newton for bringing "light" to the universe's laws, William Blake viewed Newton's emphasis on scientific materialism as a dangerous form of "single vision," omitting the spiritual and emotional. Blake's original print shows a crouched, naked Newton drawing sterile diagrams.
Paolozzi's version, reflected here, transforms Blake’s figure. The human body is rendered in the artist's characteristic style: segmented, gridded, and deconstructed with rectilinear elements. Newton’s figure is literally integrated with the mechanical universe he sought to quantify, becoming a machine-man whose physical form is inseparable from his mathematical theories. The surrounding border of futuristic, brightly colored components further emphasizes Paolozzi's lifelong exploration of the intersection between man, machine, and technology.
Context and Legacy
Paolozzi, a pivotal figure in the post-war Pop Art movement, was known for his vast, often contradictory body of work. His collaboration with Rosenthal places this profound philosophical commentary onto an accessible, mass-produced decorative item, perfectly aligning with the democratization of art advocated by the Rosenthal Studio-linie since its founding in 1961. Paolozzi's contribution stands alongside those of other major 20th-century designers who collaborated with the manufacturer, including Walter Gropius and Tapio Wirkkala.
