Antique set of Hand colored Engravings by Mark Catesby, featuring the Blue Grosbeck and Chatterer Birds.
A CENTURY before John James Audubon, there was indeed Mark Catesby.
Both are hand colored engravings. Both have plate marks visible. One with entire plate mark visible on all 4 sides, one I can simply see the side plate marks.
Vintage Wood Faux Bamboo Gilt Frames:
Height: 22 inch
Width: 18 inch
Depth: 1 inch
Vintage Professionally Framed.
Title : The Chatterer.
Title : The Blew Grofbeck
Plate Marks : 14 1/4 inch x 10 1/2 inch
Condition : they are ready to hang, as is, however you can always update them if needed. Original backing in place, stained, ripped, taped, but original. Both still retain their Rudolf Lesch Fine Art Inc labels from the time of framing, which is put at 1940s or earlier. I have not examined these outside of the frame. - I see what I need from behind glass. Platemarks are clear and inside the Mat, making them viewable to all. The thick wove paper is visible thru loop and is the few blemishes in the paper. I can’t say if the paper is watermarked, as I haven’t removed the prints. Nor can I say if the paper is laid (vs wove) as I haven’t removed them. I am not an expert, nor claim to be, but thru research I can tell that these are NOT modern reproductions by any means. I have included closeups to show all details I can see. I cannot see plate numbers but these could be behind / under the mats.
Robert Lesch framing labels remain on both. I have not found any evidence that Lesch mass produced the Catesby prints.
