A favorite pastime of mine was collecting out of the ordinary coyote statue artwork, it mattered not if they were made from wood, iron or other mediums but they had to be fabulously cool and out of the ordinary. In my former home, our builder fashioned a display shelf up high, as an entry-way focal point, to display my coyotes. When we relocated to Texas four years ago, the home we built did not have the same layout as my former home so I sold several coyotes from my collection and will continue to do so until they are all gone. I purchased this handsome fellow 25 years ago when we stayed in Santa Fe as we made our way to Sedona.

It was hand carved from cotton wood, a tree species found in New Mexico (and other places) by master woodcarver Pete Ortega. Woodcarving is a way of life for the Ortega family, starting with Pete’s father, Ben, to his brother, Joe and down to Pete’s son, Matthew. This coyote was hand carved and fashioned from one piece of wood into the fine looking fellow you see in the photos. He measures 28” x 11” x 6½” H/W/D, weight 8 lbs. In excellent, pristine condition with minimal, if any wear. Color is naturally aged cotton wood with an amber honey stain finish. If you want him to remain as fabulous looking as he is in the photos, it’s best to keep him indoors or in a temperature-controlled environment.
