DIMENSIONS About 13" high x 8 1/2" diameter DESCRIPTION Beautiful cobalt decorated two-gallon jug marked "2 / J. A. ALLEN." Cobalt flower and foliage decoration, with additional decorations around the applied strap handle. Coil firing lines plainly visible.

I found some brief references to a potter named James A. Allen who worked in Athens, New York in the mid-19th century, from about 1850 to 1870. I searched through several databases, but I could not find another known example of his work. It is likely that he was a lesser known regional potter whose works have not become widely documented. The cobalt styling around the handle seems to comport with just such a potter.

CONDITION Overall excellent. No impact fractures, dings or cracks. One tiny glaze flake just below the flower, and some surface stains and discoloration (all visible in the images). A RARE AMERICAN MID-19TH CENTURY JUG IN GREAT CONDITION! See less
