Antique map 'La rade de Bantam' known otherwise as The roadstead of Bantam by the Dutch cartographer Pieter van der Aa. (1659 - 1733)
Bantam is on the Island of Java, Indonesia and is situated on the Sunda Straits and was strategically placed for trade in the hey day of the East India Co..
The map shows the roadstead with compass rose and corresponding scale.
The hand coloured plate originates from the rare La Galerie Agreable du Monde.
Tome Premier des Indes Orientales.', published by P. van der Aa, Leyden, c. 1725 and has 66 parts - the biggest atlas ever published.
Apparently only 100 copies were printed.
Provenance - Purchased from Map Collector Jonathan Wattis Galleries, Hong Kong in the 1980's. An incredible piece of history for anyone interested in such as well as map cartography or Mappery.
Condition: Very good, General age related toning. Original middle fold as issued.
Wired and ready for hanging. Under glass with hardwood backing.

Artists and Engravers: Pieter van der Aa (Leiden 1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases. The Galerie Agreable contains plates and maps by the best Dutch engravers: Luiken, Goeree, Mulder, Stoopendaal, ao.
Further Information. Banten, also written as Bantam, is a port town near the western end of Java, Indonesia. It has a secure harbour at the mouth of Banten River, a navigable passage for light craft into the island's interior. The town is close to the Sunda Strait through which important ocean-going traffic passes between Java and Sumatra. Old Banten, the capital of the Banten Sultanate, was strategically important and a major centre for trading.
