Rare find, 1880's engraving by Richard Caton Woodville II (1856-1927) "A Sharp Shower in the Row, Hyde Park" hand colored illustration from The Illustrated London News 4 August 1883. You can see the crease in the illustration/engraving as it was folded in the newspaper. It's possible this engraving was hand colored after the newspaper came out, or it could have been a special edition in the newspaper that was colored. Most engravings from this piece of art are NOT colored, making this particular one even more of a rare treasure.
This is NOT a reproduction or a copy, this is a hand colored engraved print with deeply saturated, meticulously done hand coloring. This artwork captures a moment of unexpected weather during a horse riding party set against the backdrop of London's iconic Hyde Park. This striking artwork easily takes us back to 1883 when it was first published in The Illustrated London news. Featuring elegant horses, finely dressed equestrian sportsmen and sportswomen battling the rain and navigating the muddy terrain of Hyde Park, London in pursuit of their sport. Artwork depicts the rain with sharp, slanted lines indicating quite the downpour.
An absolute treasure, this engraving is professional framed in a gorgeous creamy white matted background surrounded by a classic gilded gold thin ornate frame. We suggest leaving this engraving in its current frame as handling it could cause damage to this piece of history, however if you do choose to reframe it, please bring it to a professional framer familiar with working with antique artwork.
Small, minor imperfections to the frame, glass as well as the engraving underneath are to be expected given the age of the piece. The frame itself is not from 1883, but we suspect it is well over 25 years old and still looks amazing and clear.

The frame itself is not from 1883, but we suspect it is well over 25 years old and still looks amazing and clear. The engraving is in fact from 1883. Engraving shows no signs of imperfections when looking at it framed, though it will be fairly fragile from age so we suggest bringing the piece in to a professional framer should you choose to reframe the artwork. less
