A superb round hinged box dating to circa 1760–1780, hand-painted with a pastoral Watteau-inspired scene depicting a gallant suitor and his lady in a garden landscape. The lid is richly bordered with gilt rococo scrollwork, while the sides display the celebrated turquoise “Schuppenmuster” scale pattern, one of Meissen’s most admired decorative motifs.
The interior is glazed white and clean, and the hinged gilt-metal mount retains its original clasp in working order. To the base appears a hand-painted blue crossed-swords mark, typical of Meissen and its contemporary imitators of the period.
