The chairs shown here are thonet 209 bentwood chairs with armrests and seats made of viennese wickerwork. This model is one of thonet's most famous classics and was originally developed in the 19th century. The 209 chair became particularly well-known thanks to le corbusier, who used it in many of his buildings (e.g., in the weissenhof estate in 1927). Its characteristic features are its flowing, curved armrests, which combine the backrest and legs into a harmonious unit.
the chairs are made of solid, bent beechwood, formed using the classic thonet steam-bend technique.
the surface is lacquered in a clear white, emphasizing their light and modern character. The round seat is covered in traditional viennese wickerwork, which creates a warm contrast to the white frame. The striking design feature is the curved backrest and armrest, which are designed in a single line and elegantly frame the seat. Below the seat, another ring-shaped bentwood element provides stability.
condition: the chairs are in very good condition. The paintwork is cleanly preserved, with only very minor signs of wear in a few places. The viennese canework of the seats is intact and shows no breaks or dents. Minor marks on the wood and the screw connections are visible but do not affect their functionality. Overall, this is a very well-preserved, authentic set of classic thonet chairs in a timeless design.
