A large Antonibon majolica plate with a fruit decoration, circa 1750, in excellent condition. It is oval in shape with mixtilinear edges and features a central fruit decoration resting on a rocaille shell. The edge features clusters of flowers punctuated by charming imaginary butterflies. The label of the Subert company of Milan is on the bottom.
The Antonibon factory, a renowned name in ceramics, was founded in 1728 by Giovanni Battista Antonibon and continued by his son Pasquale, thanks to whom it achieved fame and fortune. Originally a majolica factory, it soon began experimenting with porcelain, which has been produced regularly since 1762.
The "baroque fruit" decoration represents a popular ceramic style, whose table decorations and coats of arms feature fruit alongside small animals such as lizards and snails. The pure white enamel, which complements and highlights the shapes in a clean and cheerful manner, along with the stylistic refinement of the decorations, are the distinctive features of Antonibon craftsmanship.
