Good looking antique stools seldom come to the marketplace. It was a surprise and good fortune to find matching pieces. Each of the stool is shaped like a five petal flower, shaped by segmented pieces of wood. The undulating shaped apron confronts to the shape of the stool. The stretcher that holds the four legs together has an interesting form consists of five "quotation mark" shaped carvings. The elegant legs have nice forms with extended feet. To accentuate the elegance of each stool, the apron undulates like a wave weaving in and out of each of the five sided petals. The floral theme is carried throughout by having small flower carvings on the hanging apron. On each seat a raised five petal shape form adds additional interest. The original dark brown lacquer has worn down to the wood on the seats but is holding up well on the apron and the legs and stretchers.

The stools have interesting patina. Due to use, the seats have lost the original finish, but adds to the antique look. Plum blossoms are often used as art motifs. The plum blossom is the first to flower even in the snow in early spring. It represents beauty and endurance, able to withstand hardship. Together with the pine and bamboo, they form the Three Friends of Winter, a popular art motif in China and Japan. See less
