A wonderful old and large traditional vessel with the hallmark geometric design of the Shipibo-Conibo people. The small tribal community of approx 20,000 people lives along the Ucayali River in the Amazon rainforest of Peru. This coil-built vase is slip-coated and hand-painted by women based on designs coming from the hallucinogenic visions of shamans brought about by the use of Nishi. The designs pattern is an elaboration and expansion on that of the artists ancestors, and throughout her life will remain consistent as an almost signature and homage to her maternal line.
This piece was acquired from an anthropology professor at the University of Illinois who collected it in-situ and retired in the 1970's.
