An elegant mid-century still life that captures a charming scene of three potted plants arranged along a windowsill and silhouetted against an exterior scene of houses, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1947.

The central cactus dominates the composition with its upright, almost sculptural form, flanked by 2 other leafy plants on its sides. Through the window, the viewer glimpses a townscape with brown and red buildings, softened by pale skies and winter-bare trees.

Painted in an expressive style, the work fuses still life with urban landscape. It is representational but simplified, with a strong emphasis on shape, form, and the interplay between interior and exterior space. The artist captures not just the plants themselves, but also the mood of the scene – a quiet, contemplative moment of domestic life through the use of earthy muted shades.

The brushwork is bold and textured, with a rough, impasto application that gives the surface a tactile quality. Forms are built up through broad, confident strokes, while details are pared back to essentials, creating a sense of rhythm and structure.

This oil on board is beautifully presented in a well-suited wooden frame with an inner gilt border. The work itself is in good vintage condition, with two small pin holes to the top section when inspected closely (one at the middle of the top edge and another near the blossoming tree) – which do not detract from its overall impression. The frame is also in good condition with minor surface wear.
