Corita Kent "Sister Mary Corita" (American - 1918–1986)
Title: with love to the everyday miracle
Medium: Screenprint
Size: 35" x 23"
Signed: To lower right "Corita"
An arresting and exuberantly modernist screenprint by Sister Corita Kent, a pioneering figure of the Pop Art movement and one of the most influential printmakers of the 1960s, this large-format serigraph titled To the Everyday Miracle exemplifies her blend of vibrant visual design and progressive theology. Executed in a bold palette of saturated vermilion, leafy green, and rich violet, the work fuses typographic experimentation with spiritual and social commentary—hallmarks of Corita’s distinctive visual language. The composition layers monumental letterforms and dense overprinting with hand-scrawled texts: poetic, activist, and devotional. A central quote—“Conversion is revolution… living in a way appropriate to the coming age…”—is excerpted from contemporary religious writings that Kent often reinterpreted through the lens of mid-century civil rights discourse and Vatican II reform. The phrases “God descends” and “Man ascends” are diagrammed along a diagonal line, visually mapping transcendence as a reciprocal gesture. The print bears Kent’s signature in graphite at lower right and measures 35 x 23 inches.
Though often associated with Andy Warhol and Sister Mary Corita’s Los Angeles contemporaries, her work diverges in its fervent optimism and belief in spiritual renewal through art. To the Everyday Miracle stands as both a call to consciousness and an affirmation of divine immanence in the quotidian—a radiant fusion of gospel and graphic design.
