A characterful mid-18th century Georgian oak ladderback armchair, later adapted into a rocking chair during the 19th century. The tall back combines wide horizontal slats above turned spindle supports, an unusual vernacular variation typical of provincial workshops. The arms sit unusually low and close to the seat, a feature often seen on fireside chairs of the period, designed for comfort near the hearth.
The frame shows deep patina, wear and colour variation built up over more than 250 years of use, while the traditional rush seat remains strong though with some looseness to the underside.
This is a rare example of Georgian vernacular furniture, retaining its original presence and charm while bearing the marks of continuous domestic history. Insolid original condition, retaining its 18th-century surface and mellow patina, original rush seat showing wear underneath the seat, wear to the end of the rocker & rubbing to the arms consistent with 18th-century use. This piece is designed in the style of the selected designer and/or manufacturer
