Having grown up in a family of textile mill owners, Shuford envisioned a furniture company that would be "the best in the world". He initially acted as a selling agent for local furniture makers, but quickly opened his own plant and began manufacturing furniture. His first line was an 18th-century style mahogany dining suite that solidified the company's commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.Early on, Century secured a government contract to manufacture thousands of 5-drawer chests. While a significant undertaking, this project provided Shuford and his team with invaluable experience in factory operations. The company's reputation for high quality and attention to detail grew, and in 1950, they hired designer Raymond K. Sobota. Sobota's contributions, including the highly popular Citation Collection in 1954, helped establish Century as a leader in stylish, high-end furniture.As the decades went by, Century expanded its offerings and explored new styles. During this time, they produced many 9-drawer dressers under various collections, leading to the vintage pieces found today. The tag "of Distinction" became a hallmark of the mid-20th century pieces, signifying the quality and craftsmanship that defined the brand's early years. The exact design of each dresser was influenced by the collection it was a part of, such as the Asian-inspired Chinoiserie style or the Spanish Colonial styles of the 1970s. See less
